Learn how to get care in B.C.
The health-care system is complex. It's not always clear who to talk to or where to go to meet your health and wellness needs.
Since 2015, Trans Care BC's health navigation team has been a source of support and information, helping transgender, Two-Spirit and non-binary people, their loved ones, and caregivers navigate care pathways in B.C.
Over the years, the health navigation team has developed information to address common questions about transgender health needs, including how to self-advocate and how the health care system works in B.C.
Trans Care BC has consolidated these resources into a comprehensive guide on our new website called How to Get Care.
Within this guide, individuals can find essential information on various aspects of health-care navigation, with sections such as:
- Understanding the B.C. Health-Care System: Get a clear overview of who to talk to and what to expect, to navigate the provincial health care system confidently.
- Understanding how referrals work: Learning how to advocate can help you to catch potential mistakes and keep your referral moving forward.
- Finding a Primary Care Provider: Find an overview of the type of care these practitioners offer and get advice on finding a provider.
- Speaking with Your Provider: Learn strategies for initiating conversations and communicating health care needs effectively.
- Finding a Counsellor: Explore avenues for finding counsellors who work with transgender, Two-Spirit and non-binary people.
- Using the Peer Support Directory: Find and connect with other community members.

This in-depth guide empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health care journey and navigate the system. When people have more information, they can better understand their options and how they can speak up for their needs and priorities.
Trans Care BC is dedicated to ensuring everyone can easily find helpful information. If you have any feedback or information on how we can make this section even better, please get in touch with our team.
